SMS Elisabeth was a warship of North German Confederation Navy, and later the Kaiserliche Marine. The type of ship was a muted Arcona Class Corvette.
SMS Elisabeth named after the eponiymous Quenn of Prussia. She was built at the Royal Shipyard in Danzig and was launched on October 18. She was 73 m long, 13 m wide, and had a draft of 6,50 m. She had a maximum speed of 12 knots. The armament of the Elisabeth was in 1870, 17 ring guns with a caliber of 15 cm.
In 1869, she took part of celebrations for the opening of the Suez Canal. Admiral Guido Karcher served as a young officer on board at this time. 1876-78, she undertook a world tour. It belonged among the East Asia Squadron, SMS Leipzig and SMS Ariadne on the West coast of Nicaragua was sent in the course of the so-called iron stucco affair along with the 1878.
In 1884, she brought Seagull Dr. Gustav Nachtigal first together with the SMS Cameroon, where this “protection contracts”concluded with local tribal leaders. From there the Elisabeth was sent to Angra Peguena, and later to Lüderitzbucht, there to join the Leipzig and to raise the German flag. This took place on August 7, 1884 by its commander, Captain Schering, and constituted the starting point for the establishment of the colony of German South-West Africa.
Three months later SMS Elisabeth and SMS Hyane was involved on the Island Matupi in the Bismarck Archipelago.
On September 20, 1887, she was removed from the list of naval vessels, then served as a Hulk, and scrapped in 1904 in Stettin.
