GELDERLAND. Dutch Ship of the Line. 64 guns. Built at Amsterdam in 1781. Captured by the French in 1795 and later retumed to the Dutch when they became French Allies. Served in the Dutch Fleet in 1799 under Vice-admiral Samuel Storij whose fleet was blockaded at Vliet Roads near the Helder and which surrendered to the British Fleet of Vice-Admiral Mitchell. She was incorporated into Admiral Allan Lord Gardeners "Princess Squadron", named for the Prince of Orange who had fled to England after the French occupation of the Netherlands. She transported British troops to Ireland to quell a rebellion and was also on patrol duty near the channel Islands. After the peace of Amiens (1802) she was kept by the British for harbour service. Sold in 1817 for scrap - Central African Rep. 1989. 500f. SG1368 (Kenneth R Berry)
