WELLINGTON HARBOUR

Post by aukepalmhof » Sun Sep 08, 2013 8:34 pm

On 4 June 1980 New Zealand issued four stamps depicting scenes of the principal harbors of that country: Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton and Port Chalmers.
The 30c depict the Wellington Harbor:
The harbor was known as Port Nicholson when the barque TORY arrived with the first settlers of the new colony in 1839. It lies in a beautiful bay off Cook Strait.
Port facilities have been built up over the years and it now (1980) has two container berths and three container cranes in the Thorndon Container terminal, right centre on the stamp. The Wellington Harbor has provided the berthing list for 3 February 1977 when the photograph was taken, which was the model for the stamp design. The stamp must top all others for the number of named ships depicted. The list begins at the Overseas Passenger Terminal in the foreground and thence to the left, finishing on the Floating Dock, top right.

Below is given which vessels are depict on the stamp, but it is hardly to see which ships are showed, can make out only one ship a little bit, the SINSAKURA MARU alongside the Overseas Passenger Terminal.
