STORM ON THE SEA OF GALILEE painting

Post by aukepalmhof » Fri Jul 12, 2013 2:16 am

The Storm on the Sea of Galilee is a painting from 1633 by the Dutch Golden Age painter Rembrandt van Rijn that was in the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum of Boston, Massachusetts, United States, prior to being stolen on March 18, 1990. The painting depicts the miracle of Jesus calming the storm on the Sea of Galilee, as depicted in the fourth chapter of the Gospel of Mark in the New Testament of the Christian Bible. It is Rembrandt's only seascape. It is widely believed, because of the fourteen people in the boat, that Rembrandt painted himself in the boat along with the twelve disciples and Jesus. The crewmember looking out toward the viewer of the painting has been suggested as being a self-portrait of Rembrandt.
On the morning of March 18, 1990, thieves disguised as police officers broke into the museum and stole The Storm on the Sea of Galilee and 12 other works. It is considered the biggest art theft in US history and remains unsolved. The museum still displays the paintings' empty frames in their original locations.
On March 18, 2013, the FBI announced they know who is responsible for the crime. Criminal analysis has suggested that the heist was committed by an organized crime group. There have been no conclusions made public as the investigation is ongoing.

The stamp is designed after a painting made by the French painter Eugene Delacroix (1798-1863) and shows us Christ on the Sea of Galilee during a storm painted in 1854.
The Bible gives that Jesus and his disciples boarded a ship on the Sea of Galilee.
When leaving from the beach Jesus got asleep, after some time they were running in a storm and the disciples got afraid thinking that there small craft would be lost, and awoke Jesus saying Lord save us we perish.
He said to them, “Why are you fearful, do you have so little faith” and he rebuked the wind and sea and there was a great calm.

I think the boat depict is not a boat from that time more one of what was in use much later in France.
The following web-site gives more info on a boat found in the Sea of Galilee from the time Jesus was around. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_of_Galilee_Boat
