HMS AUDACIOUS. Battleship of Dreadnought class of 23,000 tons with 10-13.5", 12-4" guns, built by Cammell Laird 14th September 1912. Became, the first Ship of any nation, to become a casualty in WW1 when as a unit of the 2nd Battle Squadron under command of Capt. C.F. Dampier, struck a mine on 27/10/14 20 miles NE of Tory Island, Northern Ireland. She was struck on her Port side aft, but stayed afloat and made for Lough Swilly under own steam As the sea was rough she became unmanage. The White Star Liner OLYMPIC took her in tow, but the tow parted. Later the battleship EXMOUTH arrived, but too late as the stern of AUDACIOUS was awash and the crew were being taken off by OLYMPIC. Later AUDACIOUS blew up and sank, but not before all her crew were saved. It was later discovered that the mines had been laid by the converted German liner BERLIN in April.
