San Martin

Post by shipstamps » Thu Sep 11, 2008 5:25 pm

To commemorate the naval expedition which sailed from Valparaiso in August 1820 to liberate Peru, the Argentine Post Office issued a single 26c. stamp depicting the departure of the fleet. The ship leading the line is the San Martin (ex-Cumberland, of the Honourable East India Company). She was a vessel of 1,300 tons, armed with 64 guns, and was the flagship of the fleet.
The ship following her was the O'Higgins (ex-Maria Ysabel), a frigate of 44 guns. She was built at St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1813, as the Patritsii, before being bought by Spain and renamed Maria Ysabel (sometimes printed as Maria Isabel). In May 1818, she sailed from Cadiz to El Callao, escorting a convoy of 11 merchant frigates under the command of D. Manuel del Castillo, and second in command D. Dionisio Capaz, with five officers, 131 crew and 70 marines. In the Canary Islands the captain, suffering from a paralytic stroke, was disembarked, leaving Capaz in command. On October 28, off the coast of Chile, near Santa Maria Island, they approached two ships flying the British flag. These were in fact the Chilean vessels San Martin (mentioned above) and the Lautaro.
The crew of the Maria Ysabel ran their vessel aground to render her useless to the Chileans, but they were able to repair the damage and used her against the Spaniards as the 0 'Higgins. Astern of the 0 'Higgins is the brigantine Araucano, a small vessel of 270 tons, but carrying 16 guns, followed by the schooner Montezuma, of 200 tons, armed with seven guns. In the distance are a number of transports.

She was built as an East India ship by Dudman at Deptford for account of William Borradaile.
11 Nov. 1802, launched under the name CUMBERLAND.
Tonnage 1260 69/94 tons (bm), dim. 133.10 x 24.1 x 17.2ft.

Chartered by the East India Company, on 30 Jan 1803, sailed under command of Capt William Ward Farrer from Great Britain for the Cape of Good Hope, Ceylon and China. Returned U.K. and charter was terminated on 14 August 1804.
25 April 1805 again chartered by the EIC and she sailed to China direct, after her homeward voyage to the U.K, her charter ended on 07 Sept. 1806.
Chartered again on 26 Feb. 1807 for the Coromandel Coast and China, after returning in the UK her charter ended on 30 June 1808.
24 Feb. 1808 again chartered by EIC for a voyage to Bombay and China, after her return in the UK her charter ended 02 August 1810.
During this voyage she was attacked in 1810, homeward bound by the French ship MARENGO with a armament of 74 guns. (who has more on this fight between the two ships?)
Again chartered by the EIC on 16 Feb. 1811 for a voyage to Bombay and China, command was taken over by Capt. Thomas H.Wilkinson, after her return her charter ended on 15 May 1812.
18 March 1813 again chartered by the EIC for a voyage to China direct, returned the UK and charter ended on 10 August 1814.
Her last voyage she made after she was chartered on 23 Jan. 1816 by the EIC for a voyage to Bombay and China, returned home, and charter terminated on 16 May. 1817.

13 Feb.1818 sailed from Great Britain after she was sold to Don José Alvarez Condarco, Chile
22 May 1818, arrived at Valparaiso. Converted to a 3th Rate, with 60 guns, renamed SAN MARTIN.
On 02 August 1818, reported that she was fitting out in Valparaiso.
After commissioned was she part of the First National Squad.
She participated in Admiral Manuel Blanco Encalada and Admiral Thomas Alexander Cochrane Campagne.
28 Oct. 1818 together with the LAUTARO captured the Spanish frigate REINA MARIA ISABEL and the five ships of her convoy in the bay of Talachuano.
20 August 1820 sailed out in the Liberation Expedition bound for Peru under command of Don Jose de San Martin. The Liberation Expedition against Spain in the Pacific was a combined operation of Argentinean and Chilean forces, commanded by the Argentinean General San Martin. He first liberated Chile by crossing the Andes and thereafter together with the Chileans he liberated Peru (the reason that this Chilean vessel is on a Argentinean stamps.)
Took part in the blockade of Callao.
16 July 1821 wrecked in the Bay of Chorillos, Peru, when her anchor dragged. At that time she was the flagship of Cochrane

She is the ship in the foreground of the stamp, the other is O’HIGGINS second ship, and the other are the brigantine ARAUCANO and schooner MOCTEZUMA.
