DHOW on NYASSA COMPANY stamp

Post by aukepalmhof » Wed Aug 19, 2015 9:27 pm

Nyassa Company issued in 1921 two stamps which depict as given by Stanley Gibbons a “dhow”.
The design of the stamp is taken from an illustration in the book “Mast and sail in Europe and Asia” by H.W. Smyth which shows us a “sanbuq” in the Gulf of Aden. If this type of vessel has been used as far south to the north of Mozambique is doubtful. http://www.shipstamps.co.uk/forum/viewt ... buq#p10596
The illustration mentioned shows a “Dhow Beating off Ras Alargah” she is seen in rough sea and very close to the high headland, only the dhow is copied while the headland has changed to a palm tree on the stamp.
