CORINTH CANAL INAUGURATION 1893

Post by aukepalmhof » Fri Sep 04, 2015 8:56 pm

The Grand Opening Ceremony took place on the 6th August 1893 in the presence of King George I of Greece and Franz Joseph, Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary. It was open to traffic on the 28th October 1893. The Canal inevitably reduced the distance between the ports of the Aegean and the Adriatic Sea by 131 nautical miles.

The stamp is designed after a painting made by Konstantinos Volanakis (1837-1907).
Many ships are depict on the painting but I can’t find any ship names, I believe the ship on the left is the Greek Royal yacht AMPHITRITE, while Franz Joseph Imperial yacht was the MIRAMAR a white hulled yacht, which I can’t find on the painting, but an photo of the AMPHITRITE shows her also with a white hull.

Any idea which vessels are depict on this stamp?
