LAKE SAIMAA STYLIZED PASSENGER STEAMER

Post by aukepalmhof » Wed Jul 13, 2016 9:49 pm

The stamp issued by Finland in 1991 shows us a stylized passenger steamer on Saimaa Lake in Finland.

Watercraft Philately 1992 page 52 gives:
She was part of the Nordic stamp series, the theme of which is tourism. The stamp depicts a stylized version of one of the lake passenger vessels.
Saimaa is the largest lake district in Europe, covering approximately 70,000 square kilometres and comprising 33,000 islands. Seimaa is also Finland’s most important inland water transportation area, with passenger and cargo ships as well as wood floating in bundles. Through Saimaa canal the lake is connected to the sea. Saimaa steamships are famous throughout Finland. Genuine steamships still sail, for example, from Savonlinne to Punkaharju and locally in Kuopio, Savonlinna and Lappeenranta.
