In fact, any ship used for scheduled shipping, so not only sailing ships, but also ships that were towed or used mechanical propulsion. Also called scheduled barges.

Used in the era of sailing to distinguish between a sailing scheduled barge, simply called a scheduled or ferry ship, and a tow barge or barge.
Unspecified ship type. The term is often used as a type designation for the type of ship commonly used for scheduled shipping at that time and in that area. In the early days of sailing, these were often wide and narrow ships or (ferry) barges, later more like small barges, tjalk-like vessels, snikken, pakschuiten, etc.
With the advent of steam barges, the traditional types (see steam barge) were adopted and, around 1920, these barges resembled luxury motors or small motor boats.
