The 8 cents stamp of the centenary set features La Concepcion, Columbus's flagship, which now forms part of the coat-of-arms of Grenada. According to the Grenada Post Office, the island was first discovered on August 15, 1498, and was named by him" Conception," after his flagship. It is not known when Grenada received its present name. Regarding the ship illustration on the stamp, I think the least said about it the better. It has undergone quite a few modifications since it first appeared in 1898, when the structure like a bungalow on the present stamp, looked rather more like a jobber's handiwork. You can be very sure of one thing; Columbus's flagship never looked like the vessel shown on the stamp.
