Seen leaving New York, on the Columbia stamp, is the motorship Ciudad de Manizales a cargo liner built by Canadian Vickers Ltd., Montreal, for the Flota Mercante Grancolombiana. This shipping company was formed (presumably under the sponsorship of the respective governments) of interests in Colombia,Venezuela and Ecuador, and is an example of the trend since the war for South American countries to develop their own merchant shipping fleets. The Ciudad de Manizales carries 5,940 tons on 22ft. draft and has large open holds suitable for the carriage of coffee. The main engine is a Nordberg oil-engine with cylinders 29 inches in diameter. The Ciudad de Manizales has a gross tonnage of 3,947 on dimensions 420.5ft.. x 55.2f1.. x 2lft., and she has a total complement of 51. She operates on the Flota Mercante Grancolomblana's service between North America and ports in Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador. The company's headquarters were established in Bogota, and its name means Greater Colombia Merchant Marine.
It began operating on June 8, 1946, and the first vessels were eight war-built American standard motorships of the CI-M.-A.V.1 type. One of these vessels, the Republica de Venezuela. is depicted on several stamps issued by Venezuela.
