SIGMA research vessel 1972.

Not all her details I have, so additional info is welcome, also a scan of the stamp required.

South Georgia issued on 30 November 2006 a set of stamps on communications, who depict two ships used in the waters of South Georgia, the SIGMA and FLEURUS, the FLEURUS is depict on some earlier issued stamps.

By the 60p stamp the South Georgia Post Office gives:

The current mail carrier is the Fishery Patrol Vessel SIGMA which patrols South Georgia waters policing any illegal fishing activity. South Georgia falls within de area covered by the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources. (CCAMLR).

The toothfish fishery in South Georgia has secured certification from the Marine Stewardship Council, a major achievement, as this is an international certificate of the quality of management of the fishery.

Of the SIGMA I have the following info.

Built as a stern-trawler under yard No 117 by A.M.Liaanen Shipyard, Aalesund for Newington Trawlers, Hull (I am not sure of she are the owners or the managers.)
01 June 1971 keel laid down
01 March 1972 launched under the name SEAFRIDGE OSPREY fish No. H137.
Tonnage 879 gross, 1.052 dwt. Dim. 60.5 x 11.0m. Length bpp 52.5.
Powered by a 3.640 hp diesel engine, speed 13.5 knots.
01 April 1972 completed.

She was used by Seafridge Limited a company with interests in both Norway and the United Kingdom.
1975 Sold to Høegh? and renamed GADUS III.
1977 Sold to Ervik Rederiet and renamed SVALBARD.
1982 Sold to ? and converted by the Kleven Verft, Norway in a research vessel, renamed in GECO SIGMA.
Tonnage 1.467 gross, 441 net, 600 dwt. Dim. 60 x 11.02 x 7.35m., draught 5.78m, length bpp 52.51m.
June 2000 sold to Rem Vessel U.K and renamed SIGMA.
August 2000 transferred to Rem Vessel UK.
July 2003 transferred to Rem Vessel II.
September 2006 transferred to Sigma Marine, Stanley Falkland Islands.
December 2006 transferred to Maritime Research I AS, Aalesund, Norway. Under Norway International Ship Register.

http://www.equasis.org gives for 2007 IMO No 7207463, owned by Maritime Research I AS, Aalesund. Managed by Maritim Management AS, Aalesund, Norway.
