Coastal vessel in French Polynesia

Post by aukepalmhof » Fri Jun 11, 2010 9:25 pm

The only stamp of this set of four stamps interested for the shipstamp collector is the 100F stamp which depict a coastal vessel alongside the quay somewhere in French Polynesia. The vessel on the stamp till so far not identified.

The stamp is designed after a painting made by the painter Gilbert Chaussoy an artist from the Leeward Island (Society archipelago) and more precisely from the island of Raiatea. He is a son of the painter Joseph Chaussoy.
Gilbert is among those who have the taste for painting and not those who have a tendency to attempt, through research work, a complicated or obscure layout. His painting is simple and clear, and most often lingers over daily life scenes, over the living.

Who has more info on the ship depict or a name?

French Polynesia 2006 100F sg?, scott?

I got the following from the painter himself, Gilbert Chaussoy:
KEKANUI Coastal vessel from 1954 arrived in March 1970 at Tahiti for Mr Wong Wing.
50 metres, 189 tons net and 300 hp
In 1981, owned by Cie Polynésienne de transport maritime.
Captain Victor Lenoir.
The scene occurs along the quay of Moorea in the 70's

By a little more research I found that she is the Dutch coaster ROELOF BUISMAN, her after ship complete different as on the photo of the ROELOF BUISMAN, but most probably her two deck accommodation aft was fitted on after she arrived in Tahiti, and thereafter she carried also passengers.

Built as a cargo vessel under yard No 164 by N.V. “Voorwaarts” v/h E.J.Hylkema & Zn, Martenshoek, Groningen, Netherlands for N.V. Kustvaart Onderneming Zwartsluis, Netherlands.
06 March 1954 launched as the ROELOF BUISMAN. (the ship is most probably named after a member of the family of the Buisman coffee company who produce a flavour coffee activator in Zwartsluis,)
Tonnage 399 grt, 189 net, 510 dwt, dim.50.01 x 7.92 x 3.13m.
Powered by one 6-cyl Industrie 4SA diesel engine, 300 shp, speed 9 knots.
20 April 1954 trials.
22 April 1954 in service.

After completing in 1954 managed by W. Kampman’s Bevrachtingsbedrijf, Amsterdam.
17 September 1964 grounded in the Oostgat, entrance Wester Scheldt, refloated with the assistance of the tug JACOB VAN HEEMSKERCK.
1969 Sold to Wing Man Hing, Papeete, French Caledonia and renamed KEKANUI.
1981 Owned by Cie Polynésienne de Transport Maritime. Under command of Captain Victor Lenoir.
09 June 1977 beached after she damaged her hull by the Niau Atoll, Tuamotu, she was repaired.
1981 Laid up in the port of Suva, Fiji. She was arrested by the local authorities.
½ March 1983 stranded after dragged anchor in Suva Harbour during cyclone Oscar. Refloated by own means and towed back to anchorage by ports authority tug where she anchored again.
1984 Transferred to the Societe Wallisienne & Futunienne de Navigation Transpacifique, Papeete.
18 January 1985 stranded whilst at anchor at Suva during cyclone Nigel, sank in the northern anchorage in position 18 07S and 178 25E in heavy weather, the vessel was looted later by local fishermen.
1991 The hull cut in two and thereafter scuttled in deep water off Suva.
