23 September 1976 launched under the name GUAYAS, named in honor of the Chief of the Hyancavilcas. The Hyancavilcas are a native culture in the Ecuadorian coastal region. Her name also relates to the province of the ship’s homeport.

Her yearly cruises have taken the GUAYAS to the celebration of the 500 years of the Discovery of America, the Bicentennial of the Founding of Australia, and the Centennial of the State of Liberty in New York.
During 1999 visited she several ports in California, including San Francisco, where she was part of the Parade of Tall ships that were in port for the Chronicle’s 42nd annual Fourth of July Fireworks festivities.
In 2000 GUAVAS took part in Op Sail 2000, visiting several ports along the east coast of the United States. Because of her around the world representation she is usually referred to as “Ecuador’s Floating Embassy”.
The cruises she made is considered an academic period at the Ecuadorian Naval Academy in Guayaquil. In a challenging environment, midshipmen apply the principles of navigation, seamanship and other professional subjects learned in the classroom.
The crew includes 10 officers from other services, and foreign countries, including Panama, Brazil, Colombia and the United States and Chile.
During port visits the crew interact with the local community. The ship is open to the general public, and professional visits are scheduled for the midshipmen.
2000 The Commanding Officer of the GUAYAS is Captain Juan Serrano Jara, an Ecuadorian Naval Academy graduate. Class of 1974. He has held two previous commands, and in 1991 was assigned as Executive Officer of the GUAYAS.
