Re: Le Roland
Built as a third rate wooden ship-of-the-line, designed by Joseph Louis Olliver at Brest for the French Navy.
January 1770 keel laid down.
14 February 1771 launched as the ROLAND one of the Artésien class.
Tonnage 1,100 tons burthen, dim. length of gundeck 154 feet, length of keel 141 ft., beam 40.6ft, depth 20 ft. (Dimensions are all are in French Feet)
Armament Lower deck 26 – 24pdrs, upper deck 28 – 12 pdrs.
Crew 569.
September 1774 commissioned. (that was the same day she returned in France after she made her voyage to the Kerguelen Archipelago, so most probably the year is wrong.)
26 March 1773 she sailed under command of Second Lieutenant Lignivile, as flagship of Yves du Kerguelen-Trémarec from Brest for the expedition to Kerguelen Island.
07 September 1774 returned in French after the expedition, which was not a success.
Her history thereafter I could not find anything, only her end.
28 February 1779 destroyed by fire in Brest.
