BATTLE OF GULF OF NAPLES 1284

Post by aukepalmhof » Thu Jan 13, 2011 8:10 pm

The painting after this stamp was designed was made by Pieter Bruegel the Elder and painted during his voyage to Italy between 1552 -1553. On the stamp is given ‘Bataille dans le Golfe de Naples’.
It looks that it is a navy battle, you see smoke coming from the decks of the ships of firing guns.
Around 1552/53 I can not find any navy battle which took place in the Bay of Naples.

A lot of sources given that it shows the Navy Battle of the Gulf of Naples which took place on 5 June 1284 between an Aragonese-Sicilian galley fleet commanded by Roger of Laura which defeated the Neapolitian galley fleet under command of Charles of Salerno.
The vessels depict on the foreground of the painting are not galleys, and I think it is more a harbour view of Naples around 1553, and the ships an artistic license by the painter, when he completed this painting.
