The Deutschland was the first vessel of the HamburgAmerikanische Paketfahrt Aktien Gesellschaft (Hapag). She made their first sailing in 1848.
A vessel of 700 tons, she had accommodation for 20 first‑class and 200 steerage passengers. Passage times were about six weeks westbound and four weeks eastbound. A small quantity of cargo was carried. The vessel was followed by the 3‑masted barques NordAmerika (1848), Rhein (1849) and Elbe (1849) and other sailing vessels.
