U-BOAT type VllC

The type VII C U-boat was built at various shipyards in Germany and was the workhorses of the U-Boat service.
In total 568 boats were commissioned between 1936 and 1944.
Displacement 769 ton surfaced, 871 ton submerged. Dim. 66.60 x 6.20 x 9.60m., draught surfaced 4.72m.
Powered diesel electric by two supercharged Germaniawerft 6-cyl. diesel engines, 2,800-3,200 hp., speed 17.7 knots surfaced, 7.6 knots submerged.
Range 8,500 miles by a speed of 10 knots surfaced, 130 miles by a speed of 2 knots submerged.
Diving depth 280 metres.
Armament: 1 – 8.8 cm gun, 1 – 3.7 cm and 2 – 2 cm AA guns. 4 Bow torpedoes, and one stern, 53.3 cm. Carried14 torpedoes, or carried 39 mines without torpedoes.
Crew 44 – 52.

This type mainly operated in the North Atlantic, and were known for their wolf pack attacks during the night when many U-Boats attacked simultaneous an Allied convoy.
She was loved by the crew for their manoeuvrability and fast diving speed.
All this submarine have been sunk or were scuttled or scrapped except one the U-955 which is on display by the Marine Memorial in Laboe near Kiel, Germany.
