Built as a mercantile wooden cargo vessel in 1774 by the Langbourne yard in Whitby.
Launched as the DILIGENCE.
Tonnage 298 ton (bm), dim. 91.5 x 27.5 x 11.5ft., length of keel 74.9ft.

January 1776 bought by the Royal Navy.
Fitted out as a discovery vessel and bottom sheathed from 09 January till 13 May 1776 at Deptford.
Her brig rig was altered in a full rigged ship.
February 1776 commissioned as the HMS DISCOVERY under command of Comdr. Charles Clerke.
Armament 8 guns.
Crew 70.
14 July 1776 she sailed in Cook’s third discovery voyage.
August 1779 under command of Lieut. James King.
04 October 1780 returned in the United Kingdom.
15 December 1780 on orders of the Admiralty fitted out as an armed transport in Woolwich Dockyard from December 1780 until May 1781.
May 1781 became a dockyard craft.
October 1797 broken up in the Chatham Dockyard.
