ATLANTIS tall ship 1905

Built under yard No200 as a lightship by J.H.N. Wichorst, Hamburg for the German Government.
Launched as the BURGERMEISTER BARTELS, named after Dr. jur. Johann Heinrich Bartels (1761-1850) a member of the senate of the Free Hanse town of Hamburg.
Tonnage 369 grt. Dim. 39 x 7.45 x 2.87m., length bpp. 42.50m.
Steam engines 200 hp.
1905 Completed.

From 1905 till 1914 used as lightship on station Elbe 3.
1914 till 1918 unknown what she was doing.
1919 till 1939 in use as lightship on Elbe 2 station, position 02 54N 08 25E.
During World War II from 1940 till 1945 used as blockade and advance guard ship on the green lane in the
Baltic Sea.

22 November 1963 during a storm with wind with hurricane force, was she rammed by the French cargo
vessel BOUCAT, the bow was pushed in on the lightship and the side was ripped open, while the foremast
came down.
10 December 1974 the Danish freighter BANANA came in collision with the lightship in which she was
severe damaged.
Taken out of service.
From 1975 till 1979 laid up at the Wedel depot of the Wasser und Schifffahrtamtes in Hamburg.
14 September 1979 sold to Fa. Eckhardt & Co., Hamburg.
1980 Sold to the Hamburger Fire Brigade for fire extinguishing training used till 1983.
Between 1984 and 1985 modification work was carried out by Scheel & Joehnk shipyard in Hamburg and
Stettin
Tonnage 299.1 grt, 191.7 net. Dim. 57.00 x 7.40 x 4.70m. (draught)
Fitted out as a three-masted barkentine.
Sail area 742 square meters.
2 Auxiliary Mercedes diesel engines each 135 kW.
Accommodation for 70 people for daytrips, crew 15. For long voyages accommodation for 34 guests.

Thereafter used as a charter vessel world wide. Mostly during spring and autumn she sails in the western
Mediterranean and in the summer in the Baltic Sea, while during the winter season you can find her in the
Caribbean.

2005 Taken over by the Tallship Company, and she underwent a general refurbishment by the Ship Repair
Yard Szczecin, Poland.
Since 2006 she sails mainly near the Balearic islands and the Cote d’Azur in the Mediterranean.
