This stamp issued on 20 October 2009 is one of a set of five stamps to commemorate the Greek Mythology and Folk Tradition.
The Hellenic Post gives the following by this stamp:
The sirens are mentioned for the first time in the odyssey, where they are referred to as female deities with the head of a woman and the body of a bird. With their enchanting song and their lyres, they bewitched sailors, who remained forever on their island, having forgotten their destination.
Circe had warned Odysseus of the danger, and he stopped the ears of the sailors with wax, while he himself was bound tightly to the mast, as he wanted to hear their song.
