The Russian stamp (one of six) issued in 1989 is designed after a illustration from the book “Deerslayer” of the American writer James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851)
He published over 50 works on history, the sea and American Indians under which the most famous “The Last of the Mohicans” Many of his books were translated in other languages and some are till today available or you can read the books on the internet.
The stamp shows us two Indian birch bark canoes.
A birch- or barkboat is the general term given to a small boat made from three bark. May employ sophisticated construction, as with the Native American birchbark, sprucebark or elmbark canoes, or be quite primitive Elmbark used inside out. Generally closed at the ends, but some have sheer that sweeps up and are open ended.
Shape contained by ribs or by athwartships cording or sticks. Usually long and narrow.
