FREDERICA ferry 1890

Built as a passenger ship under yard No 250 by J & G Thomson Ltd., Clydebank, Glasgow, Scotland for the London & South Western Railway Co., Southampton.
05 June 1890 launched as the FREDERICA.
Tonnage, 1,059 gross, dim. 253.0 x 35.1 x 14.8ft.
Powered by two three cylinder triple expansion steam engines, total power 5,700 ihp, twin shafts, service speed 17 knots
21/22 July 1890 trials, during the trials she reached a speed of 19.5 knots.

31 July 1890 she arrived for the first time at Jersey in her service between Southampton and the Channel Islands.
01 December 1903 in the service between Southampton and Le Havre.
1904 On the yard of Day & Summers, Southampton overhauled and modernized, her funnel was lengthened.
June 1911 sold to Idarei Massousieh in Constantinople, Turkey via the Turkish Shipping Commission.
1912 Transferred to Administration de Nav. & Vapeur Ottemané in Constantinople and renamed in NILUFER.

During World War I was she lost when in use by the Turkish Navy as a minesweeper on 19 November 1914 off Kilyos with the loss of 63 crew.

On the stamp are two vessels depict the IBEX (foreground see list for her details) and FREDERICA while the two ships were racing each other near Portelet.
