Built as a paddle steamer by Baumgarten & Burmeister at Copenhagen for a group of citizen headed by paper manufacturer Michael Drewsen.
Launched as the HJEJLEN (Plover).
Tonnage 39 gross, dim. 26.9 x 3.8 x 1.7m (draught)
Powered by a two cylinder oscillating coal fired steam engine, 40 hp, speed 8 knots.
Passenger capacity 175.
1861 Delivered.
She is the oldest paddle steamer in the world, the Norway steamer SKIBLADNER is older but she was rebuilt in 1888.
Under her own power she sailed from Copenhagen for the Silkeborg Lakes.
11 June 1861sailed for her maiden voyage from Silkeborg to Himmelbjerget, (the town with Denmark’s highest hill) and Laven.
The trip between the three towns runs along a river and several connected lakes.
She got new boilers in 1900 and 1947.
Only during the summer season in service, she sails mostly twice from Silkeborg.
2011 HJEJLEN celebrated its 150th anniversary with Queen Margrethe II in attendance.
