ATTÆRINGER

Post by aukepalmhof » Wed Nov 23, 2011 7:17 pm

The ATTÆRINGER a boat propelled by eight oars and used in the Vestmannaeyjar Islands a island on the south coast of Iceland.
Mostly used for fishing and dates from the mid-18th century and gone in the early 20th century.
Clinker planked, open decked. Long keel. Outside rudder.
Sharp ends, widely flared sides.
The boat depict on the stamp does not carry oars so far I can see, but stepped two masts.
The type was also used on the North and West coast of Norway, and most probably the type was brought to Iceland by the Norwegian.
Watercraft on Stamps II gives that the boat depict is the eight oared lugger GIDEON built in 1836, can not find any info on her.

The TEINÆRINGUR a wooden boat propelled by 18 oars and mostly used for long voyages.

The SEXÆRINGUR a wooden boat propelled by 12 oars, on the stamp seen as open boat stepped with two masts.

Iceland 1997 sgMS889, scott848a/b/c.
