The memorial stamp commemorates the centenary of the formation of the Hungarian Inland and Maritime Shipping Co. (MPTR). The public limited company was founded on January 24, 1895 and used to be the first Hungarian shipping company. At present it functions under the name of Hungarian Shipping Company Co. (MAHART)
The passenger boat depicted on the stamp is one of the first steamers of the MFTR called FRANCIS JOSEPH 1. The ship behind the steamer is one of the newest self-propelled motor I vessels of MAHART; the BAROSS motor ship. The latter one was built for the Danube-Main-Rhine waterway system and was launched in 1993. The vessel was planned and constructed in the MAHART Dockyard.
The two ships together represent the beginning, the present and the future. The same is represented by the company emblems of MFTR and MAHART.
The stamp issued for the centenary of the formation of MFTR was designed by graphic artist Pal Varga. The stamp will be put into circulation by the Hungarian Post Office Co. Ltd. on 24 January 1995. It was produced by the State Printing Office Co. Ltd. in 750.000 copies in a perforation size of 45X27,7 mm.
