Built as a four mast sailing training vessel under yard No 688 by theVickers-Armstrongs yard at Barrow, U.K. for the Brazilian Navy.
11 June 1933 keel laid down.
19 December 1933 launched as the ALMIRANTE SALDANHA (U 10).
Displacement 3,325 tons fully loaded, dim. 93, 39 x 15.85 x 5.50m. (draught).
Sail area 25,990 square feet.
Auxiliary diesel engine of 1,400 hp, one shaft, speed 14 knots maximum.
Radius on engine by a speed of 9 knots, 10,000 mile.
Armament: 4 – 102mm, 1 – 76 mm AA gun, a machine gun and 1 torpedo tube of 533 mm.
Crew including cadets 460 men.
11 June 1934 completed.
26 June 1934 commissioned in the Brazilian Navy.
05 July 1934 sailed on her maiden voyage from Barrow via Portsmouth, Lisbon, La Spezia, Barcelona before she arrived on 24 October in Rio de Janeiro.
Then used as a training ship for the Brazilian Navy until 1953 when she arrived on 16 May at Rio de Janeiro after a world circumnavigation which had begun the previous year.
1954 Used as a survey vessel by the Brazilian Hydrograph Service.
1957 Was she refitted in an Oceanographic research vessel, an oceanographic laboratory was fitted in her torpedo tube was removed. Her four masts were cut away
03 August 1957 commissioned in her new role.
Between 1962 and 1964 underwent extensive renovation work by the navy in Rio de Janeiro, new marine and biology labs, chemistry, meteorology, radioactivity, geology and ichthyology.
Also six oceanography winches were installed. Pennant No chanced to H 10. as seen on photo.
End 1964 the renovation work was finished. Crew 30, 20 scientists and 10 students
Her maiden voyage in her new role was to Ascension Island and the Gulf of Guinea
Then used as Oceanographic research vessel mostly in the South Atlantic Ocean.
06 August 1990 out of commission as an Oceanographic research vessel, after 56 years in service, sailing 694,972 miles.
She was thereafter transferred to the Directorate of Hydrography and Navigation in Niteroi, and for so far I can find still there sitting idle in 2012.
