SUKHBAATHAR

Post by aukepalmhof » Mon Aug 20, 2012 8:32 pm

Stanley Gibbons “Collect Ships on stamps gives the name SUKHE BATAR but the real name is SUKHBAATAR. Watercraft Philately gives her name as SUKNATAR.
She was built in Russia and given to Mongolia, transported on 100 lorries across the steppe to Lake Hovsgol or Khösgol on the border between Mongolia and Siberia where she was reassembled.
1938 Completed and named SUKHBAATAR (III). Named after Damdiny Sukhbaater, the Mongolian leader who drove China out of Mongolia in 1920
Used by the Mongolian Navy for patrol duty on lake Hovsgol, with a crew of 6-7.
Can not find any details on her tonnage, dimensions and her diesel engine.
She is till today the only engine powered navy ship in the Mongolian Navy.

In the 13th Century was the Mongolian Navy the largest and most powerful navy in the world, they lost there interests in the fleet after two failed invasions of Japan.
Two former ships in the Mongolian Navy had carried the name SUKHBAATAR, both has sunk and the wrecks are still visible near the quay where the SUKHBAATHAR (III) is berthed.
In the 1990 the Mongolian Navy had only the SUKHBAATHAR and some barges and small patrol vessels.
1997 The Mongolian Navy was privatized and the SUKHBAATHAR has to own her own bread.
She is used now for patrol work, towing barges across the lake, and during the summer season carries sightseers on the lake.
2012 Still in service.

(A photo of her shows her with an altered superstructure.)
