This souvenir sheet issued to Commemorate 15 years of PROANTAR - which began in 1982, the year in which the first Brazilian expedition to the Antarctic took place.
The souvenir sheet shows the Oceanographic Support Ship ARY RONGEL - H 44, ex-Polar Queen, she was the first ship to bear that name in the Navy of Brazil, from Admiral Rongel Ary dos Santos; map of South America, and a detailed map of the South Shetland Islands showing the Ferraz base (Antarctic base of Brazil) with a Brazilian flag.
Built as a sealer under yard No 111 by G.Eides Sønner, Hoylandsbygd, Norway for Rieber Shipping A/S, Bergen, Norway.
27 September 1980 launched as the POLAR QUEEN.
Tonnage 955 grt, 314 nrt, 1,050 dwt. Dim. 65.0 x 13.0 x 5.33m. Length bpp. 56.0m.
Powered by two MAK diesel engines, 4,500 bhp., speed 14 knots.
March 1981 completed.
1986 Lengthened, and refitted in a research vessel, tonnage 1,982 grt, 1,100 dwt, dim. length overall 75.3m, length bpp. 67.4m.
One hatch, cargo capacity 1,760 m³.
One helicopter deck for Bell 212 helicopters.
One crane of 25 ton.
1993 Sold to the Brazilian Government to be used as an icebreaker and oceanographic research vessel.
25 April 1994 commissioned in the Brazilian Navy as the ARY RONGEL (H44), named after Admiral Ary dos Santos Rongel.
Has a helipad and hangar for two Helibras Esquilo helicopters.
Crew 70.
08 April 2012 she got stuck in heavy pack ice in the north eastern end of Bransfield Straits near the South Shetland Islands.
With the assistant of the British RRS ERNEST SHACKLETON who arrived there the same evening. She followed the British ship through the pack-ice and the next morning she got free of the pack ice and proceeded to Punta Arenas, Chile.
