MATHUSALEM

Post by aukepalmhof » Wed Aug 14, 2013 4:03 am

The Cayman Islands Postal Service released a set of stamps titled Anchors. This stamp issue features the anchors of local shipwrecks, illustrates the type of ship and provides a brief background of the circumstances of the sinking and the location. The stamps highlight the anchors of the Mathusalem (20c), Topsy (25c), Inga (25c), Tofa ($1.50), Glamis ($2). Anchors are an important detail because they are useful in identifying the size of a ship, since there is a specific scale of size to weight ratio between ships and their anchors. They also assist in identifying the date when a ship was built.
Built as a wooden barque by Giuseppe Tonello at Trieste, at that time Austria for Maritime Association of Sabioncello.
Launched as MATHUSALEM
Tonnage 558 ton, dim. 143.0 x 30 x 19ft.
Barque rigged.
1868 Completed, homeport Sabioncello. Austrian flag and registry.

1874 Did she sail under command of Captain Cattineo.
Around 1887 was she sold to A Buntielich & Co, Trieste, not renamed.
Her last voyage was under command of Captain Buntielich.
1893 Lost at East End, Grand Cayman, her anchors and piles of chains lie on the reef crest, jettisoned in attempts to lighten her.
