HIEL. Battle Cruiser. Japanese Navy. Built in 1914 by Kawasaki, Kobe. Keel laid 4th November 1911. Launched on 21st November 1912. Completed 4th August 1'914. 29300tn. L704'. B92'. Dr20'9". Powered by Parsons turbines. 13800hp. 4 screws. 18kn. Armed with Eight 14". Sixteen 6". Eight 5" AA guns. Four 21" TT. Complement 980. Demilitarised under the London Treaty and employed as a sea going Training Ship. The Emperor of Manchukuo visited Tokyo in her 1935. She was rearmed during WW2. On 14 November 1942 she was hit off Savo Is. in the Solomons by the US Navy and Air Force and scuttled as she could no longer steer, being the result of damage from gunfire. She sustained 85 hits including some 16" shells, 3 torpedo hits and bombs - Japan 1935. 6s. SG276-8. (LB4/80. 11/77)
