History/Notes: Last of the SAR's 'big four' and represented a steady development in SA tugs. 11 ft longer than any of the others all the extra length being forr'd of the bridge. Although many did not like her appearance it had its advantages, overhanging bows were less likely to cause damage to her wheelhouse and whale boats could be carried on the fore deck for pilot duties. She was named after Sir William Hoy, the first General Manager of the South African Railways and Harbours (who is thought to be the only person to have two harbour craft named after him, the other being the Sir William, a pinnace used in Walvis Bay). The Sir William Hoy rendered service in the Durban harbour until 1979, and was scrapped in 1981.
