Re: FREELANCE. 1907
Maybe our yacht collectors have more on this yacht.
Built as a two decked schooner under yard no 152 by William Chalmers & Co. at Rutherglen.
Launched under the name FREELANCE.
Tonnage 81 tons, length 84ft.
1908 completed.
She did not appear in Lloyds Register of 1910/1923/1933 so it looks she was built as a yacht.
Appears in the “Mercantile List” for 1926 under sailing ships.
ON 124248 Port of registry Glasgow.
Call sign KJLG.
She is shown as having an “auxiliary motor” but no details given.
Owned by William Exshaw, Royal Thames Yacht Club, Knightsbridge, London
(A William Exsham competed for GB in the yachting events in 1900 Olympic Games.)
1922 Still registered in Glasgow.
28 September 1940 hired as an auxiliary patrol vessel, at that time still classified as yacht.
1940 Renamed BUNTING used as base ship.
1940 Renamed FREEWILL used as accommodation ship.
1945 Disposal.
1947 Registered in Kings Lynn.
1954 She was brought over from the Mediterranean with a mostly female crew to Antigua, and from then used as a charter yacht from this island by Desmond Nicholson.
1973 Lloyds Register of yachts gives:
FREELANCE ON 124248 Call sign MKSF
Auxiliary twin screw, gaff rigged.
Owned by Foreign Properties Ltd, Bahamas.
Port of registry Kings Lynn.
She was designed by F. Shepherd for Lory & Co. Ltd.
Tonnage 81.15 grt, 55.17 net, 106 dwt., dim. 86 x 19.2 x 12.5ft., length waterline 73.3ft
Two Caterpillars oil engines, each 4-cyl., fitted in 1959.
1978 Bought by authorities of British Columbia, with the intention to refit her in a training ship.
She left the Caribbean the same year but nearby Panama Canal she ran on a reef, after some bandits ransacked her, after the looting was she a wreck and was not refloated.
