COIRO dugout

Post by aukepalmhof » Sat Nov 23, 2013 8:14 pm

The stamp shows us the stilt village Bletankoro in Ivory Coast with in the foreground two dug outs canoes.
Noting I could find on the village Bletankoro but I believe the dugouts are “coiro” dugouts.

It is a lightweight dugout used in Ivory Coast and used for lagoon fishing in the areas to the east and the west of Abidjan.
Braced by multiple ligatures of palm fibre at bow and stern instead of thwarts.
The stern is wider than the bow and rounded with shelf-like extension.
Bow rounded and overhanging.
Seat for the fisherman on the bottom just abaft amidship.
Length 5 metre, beam 0,6 metre.

Ivory coast 1972 200f sg397, scott?
