loch etive

Post by aukepalmhof » Sun Nov 30, 2014 7:35 pm

Built as an iron hulled full rigged cargo vessel under yard No 134 by A & J Ingles, Pointhouse near Glasgow, Scotland for Aitken Lilburn & Co. (General Shipping Co.), Glasgow.
22 November 1877 launched as the LOCH ETIVE.
Tonnage 1,288 gross, 1,235 net, dim. 226.9 x 35.9 x 21.6ft.
December 1877 completed.

She was built for the trade between the U.K. and Australia as a wool clipper. Her maiden voyage under command of Captain William Stuart was to Sydney, then to Calcutta to load a cargo of jute for the U.K.
17 January 1878 passed the Scillies and after a passage of 76 days arrived on 03 April in Sydney.
In 1881 she made another fast passage in 76 days from the River Clyde to Sydney.
In her career she was not a fast passage maker between the U.K. and Australia.
21 September 1894 captain Stewart died on board on a voyage from Melbourne with a part cargo of wool for Antwerp. He was buried at sea.
1894 Command was taken over by Captain Fishwick.
The maritime writer Joseph Conrad sailed on her for some time as a third mate.
Otherwise she was a lucky ship I can’t find any mishap in her career.
October 1908 was she rerigged as a barque.
1909 Command was taken over by Captain Anderson.
1911 Sold by the Loch Line to a French owner for £1350 as a coal hulk, but I am not sure she was used as so. She was already scrapped the 4 quarter 1911 at Genoa, Italy.
