The wreck as given on this mint sheet of Tristan da Cunha is the COIMBRA who was built as a yacht by Hugh M’Laan & Sons Ltd., Gourock, Scotland for Noel Redfern, South Africa.
Designed by Laurent Gilles and Partners Ltd.
16 October 1952 launched as the COIMBRA.
Displacement 10.5 ton. Dim. 41 x 10.6 x 6.3ft. (draught)
Cutter rigged, sail area 1000 square feet.
Crew 6.
Homeport Port Elizabeth, South Africa.
She was the first yacht on the Clyde built with a hull of aluminium alloy.
She was built for a planned circumnavigation.
After departing from the Clyde she ran in a horrendous storm in which the PRINCESS VICTORIA was lost, she survived the storm at least reaching south England before departing for her world trip.
She reached Tristan da Cunha in 1953 where she was towed in by the islanders and was anchored near the shore. A few days later she went aground as what then was known as Big Beach,
During the volcano eruption in 1962 which covered Big Beach the yacht was covered in the lava and disappears completely.
