GANGUT 1717-18 (Russia & Sweden) A battle fought during the Great Northern War. The first major Russian naval victory and the climax of the war was the Battle of Gangut or Hango Head in 1714 in which a fleet of Russian galleys overcame a Swedish force and captured ten galleys for the loss of only one of their own. By the end of the war in 1718 the Russians had fifty-three battleships, thirty-one of which had been built in the new Russian shipyards and were a major naval power in the Baltic. - Russia 1989 50k Min Sheet SG2446 (LB 19/16)
