The war canoe or periagua is generally by the Carib people known as a large craft which can carry as many as 50 persons and used for war expeditions.
She can be long as 12 metre, and became extinct ca. 1800.
The description of the craft vary. Some reported to have been constructed of two tree trunks, others were plank-extended, the planks sewn on and pitched with bitumen. Some wholly or partly decked; a flat-pooped stern carved with an animal’s head was reported.
Rowed but on long expeditions carried leg-of-mutton sails.
