Sweden shows on his Europa stamps of 1994 three Swedish explorers, with in the background of the stamps the area which they explored.
Only one stamps has a maritime theme, the centre stamp shows the explorer and ethnologist Eric von Rosen 1879-1948. He is depict in a canoe/dugout paddling through the wetlands in Zambia. On the left of the stamp are the bows of some dugouts visible.
Eric von Rosen was very wealthy and the owner of Rockelstad, which meant he could join Erland Nordenskjöld as a ethnographer on the Chaco-Cordillera expedition to the border between Argentina and Bolivia in 1901/02. The expedition was mostly paid by Rosen.
But his dream was an expedition through Africa, he started in 1911 from Bwana Mkubwa, Zambia with 120 bearers to try to find an unknown pygmy tribe living near Lake Bangewuelu in Zambia.
His major contribution is his research on this people he called the Batwa tribe.
