Post by aukepalmhof » Mon Mar 28, 2016 7:10 pm

The paddle steamer Primátor Dittrich was named after the founder of Prague Steamboat Company (1865), Prague’s mayor (in Czech “primátor”) František Dittrich.
František Dittrich (1801-1875) was born into a raftsman’s family in Podskalí in Prague. He started his career in the same trade but soon (1826) became a log dealer. He applied his diligence and skills and soon become one of the wealthier citizens of Podskalí.
Dittrich pursued many activities including a contribution to the building of the National Theatre, and received the Golden Cross of Merit with a Crown order.
As an enthusiastic Czech patriot, he helped establish the Měšťanská Beseda club of Czech patriots in Prague in 1845 and three years later, in the turbulent year of 1848, he was a member of the Prague deputation who visited the Emperor in Vienna on 14 March 1848 with a petition for recognition of Czech national rights. In 1863, he became a deputy Prague mayor. His political career culminated in 1870-1873 when he served as Prague’s mayor.
For his pioneering role in the introduction of passenger steamboats on the Vltava river, František Dittrich was awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Franz Josef.
The paddle steamer Primátor Dittrich later became popular thanks to the book Mutiny on the Steamer Primátor Dittrich by Jaroslav Žák and Vlastimil Rada, published in 1930.
The paddle steamer PRIMATOR DITTRICH was built 1891 (not a yard given), for the Prague Steamboat Company (PPS).
Could not find any details on tonnage, engine and dimensions.
1902 She was in the service between Prague and Stechovic on the Vltava River.
After a boiler explosion on the paddle steamer FRANZ JOSEF in 1898 all the steamers of the PPS received a new boiler type.
1900 The PRIMATOR DITTRICH received the new type of boiler.
1937 She was renamed VYSEHRAD and in 1942 renamed in CHRUDIM, 1945 she was renamed again in VYSEHRAD.
After been in service for 60th years she was taken out of service in 1951.
Then used as a clubhouse by the Young Pioneers. Fate unknown.
