BULGARIAN NAVY SHIPS IN 1980

Post by aukepalmhof » Mon Apr 27, 2020 8:48 pm

In 1980 Bulgaria issued one stamp of 8ct for the Bulgarian People’s Army. The stamp depicts a helicopter, a missile boat of the OSA type and an amphibious landing ship, what is given by Navicula and Stanley Gibbons as one of the Ropucha class. I think this is wrong the Bulgarian Navy has never had one of the Ropucha class in service till 1980. Photos of this class look also quite different as the image on the stamp.

Most probable she is one of the Polnocny -A class a medium landing ship of Project 770, built-in Poland, and 2 units were in service by the Bulgarian Navy. These amphibious ships each could transport and land six tanks and 150 troops.

The OSA -1 class, 6 units were in service by the Bulgarian Navy when the stamp was issued, more info is given on the class viewtopic.php?f=2&t=17088&p=20288&hilit=OSA#p20288
