The steamer Delphin is seen on the stamp Cartagena Cantonal Revolution with the gun-boat Torch and the frigate Mendez Nuñez
The stamp is based on an illustration (Landing crews of revolted Spanish ships at Fort Navidad , Carthagena) from the magazine The Illustrated London News, 30 August 1873
The Delphin was the fourth ship of the Camaeleon class , a class of eight first-class steam gunboats of the Royal Prussian and Imperial Navy.
The Delphin was laid down by the Royal Shipyardin in Danzing on September 8, 1859 After completion, the ship was tested without being officially commissioned and then transferred to Stralsund.
Delphin was 43.28 meters (142 ft) long, with a beam of 6.96 m and a draft of 2.67 m . She displaced 422 metric tons at full load. The ship's crew consisted of 4 officers and 67 enlisted men. She was powered by a single marine steam engine that drove one 3-bladed screw propeller, with steam provided by two coal-fired trunk boilers, which gave her a top speed of 9.1knots at 250 metric horsepower. As built, she was equipped with a three-master schooner rig. The ship was armed with a battery of one rifled 15 cm 24-pounder muzzle-loading gun and two rifled 12 cm 12-pounder muzzle-loading guns.
After King Amadeo I abdicated in Spain and the First Spanish Republic was proclaimed on February 11, 1873, the Delphin was ordered to Spain in March 1873 to ensure the protection of German citizens and German economic interests along the Spanish Mediterranean coast during the Third Carlist War that had broken out the previous year.
