In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, shipowners and skippers primarily acquired their cargo by contacting merchants seeking ship space. When a merchant needed an entire ship to transport his goods, he could charter it. This was especially common when transporting mass-produced goods, such as grain and timber.
