(Jacht van Gecommiteerde Raaden.)
A Yacht of the Councillors, seen from the starboard side. The ship is fully under sail. It carries three flags bearing the coat of arms of Holland. The transom is decorated with carvings. The ship is towing a sloop. A village can be seen in the background. These yachts were at the disposal of the representatives of the Provincial Executive (then called the Councillors) on the fleet. These representatives provided advice and assistance to the naval officers on the ships.
The stamp design is based on the etching by G. Groenewegen: “The Council Commissioners’ Yacht Sailing with the Wind, 1789”.
Gerrit Groenewegen (1754-1826) was a Rotterdam artist, best known for his waterscapes and meticulous etchings of ships. Between 1786 and 1801, he produced a series of 84 etchings, each depicting a detailed representation of a contemporary ship type.
