А specific type of seagoing fishing vessel from the Overmaas, Middelharnis, Zwartewaal, Pernis, and surrounding areas. a tjalk-like wooden fishing vessel similar to the Smak. The vessel had NO station!
The term «gaffelschip» is sometimes used for any vessel with a mainsail equipped with a standing gaff. See also gaff ship and «gaff barge».
A «gaffelaar» or «gaff barge» (Gaffelaer, Gaffelschuyt) is a predecessor of the «tjalk» and had many similarities with the Frisian eel barges. They were round and heavy-duty with ample sheer. The gaff barge was found in two places: Brabant/Zeeland and Overijssel.
The sails were initially set with a sprit or smack sail, later this became: a standing gaff rig as the mainsail, and then a staysail, jib, and jib. Only a small mizzen was carried on the aft mast.
The «gaff barge» was also called a Brabants beurtschip (Brabant barge). It was used as a barge on the Brabant inland waterways, but also as a fishing vessel, particularly on the Zeeland waters. After the introduction of the fishing sloop from France in 1817, the gaff boats quickly fell into disuse.
