The German Democratic Republic issued a 35pf. stamp in 1972 depicting the brigantine training ship Wilhelm Pieck, the vessel being shown against a background of a 3-bladed propeller, a somewhat odd combination. The stamp commemorates the Gesellschaft fur Sport und Technik, so presumably the propeller represents technique or technology. The brigantine was built by WarnowWerft, at Warnemunde, in 1952, her displacement being 290 tons. Her length is 164 ft. 1 in; beam 24 ft. 3 in, and draft 11 ft. 10 in. She has a sail area of 5,382 sq. ft. Her 106 hp. oil engine can give her a speed of eight knots. The crew consists of 11 men as a permanent staff, with 35 boys in training, and she cruises mainly in the Baltic Sea. The Wilhelm Pieck is under the ownership of the Gesellschaft fur Sport und Technik. Although she is not a naval ship, she appears in Jane's where her displacement is given as 200 tons, and year of build as 1951. Sail area 5,384 sq. ft. She has a steel hull.
