Osloskoyta (Lifeboat)

Post by shipstamps » Sat Dec 27, 2008 11:27 am

Pictured on this stamp is the lifeboat Osloskoyta. She was presented to the Norwegian Lifeboat Institution by the citizens of Oslo in 1940. Built at Risor, she has the following dimensions: Length overall 57 ft. 8 in. x 18 ft. 7 in. with a draft of 9 ft. 6 in; displacement is 50.4 tons. She is powered with an oil engine of 180 h.p. and a 14 h.p. auxiliary . engine. For navigational purposes she has a 70-watt wireless telephone. It will be noted that the third stamp sells at 10 ore to provide radio-telephone equipment in Norwegian lifeboats. She also has a radar set and echo sounding gear. A similar vessel, the Roald Amundsen, is depicted on the seventh stamp. Today, the Norwegian Lifeboat Institution has 26 craft, four of which are of modern "cruiser" design. They are all diesel-powered, but carry sails for steadying purposes in heavy weather. All the vessels have individual names, and, like our own lifeboats, are usually named after the donors.
