The M/V ELMA Río Carcarañá was an Argentine breakbulk cargo vessel in service with the Argentine Navy during the Falklands War as a supply ship. She was named after a River in Argentina, The Carcarañá River.

Her military service began officially on April 22, 1982 when she put to sea from Buenos Aires with a mixed load of munitions and material destined for war.

She joined forces with several other Argentine Merchant ships on or about May 3rd, 1982 and sailed for Isla De Los Estados to discharge and reload cargo before she put back to sea on May 10th, destined for Puerto Rey loaded again with munitions and supplies for Argentine forces operating ashore.

At 1000hrs on May 16th, the Río Carcarañá was overflown by a British Recon plane, but continued to make her 17 knot top speed for the protection of Puerto Rey, hoping to outrun any forthcoming attack. At 1330hrs on the 16th two British Harriers appeared on the horizon and initiated a attack on the Río Carcarañá, repeatedly strafing the ship with canon fire and dropping two bombs into her hull. The ship quickly caught fire and her Captain was quick to order the crew over the side, fearing his ship's volitile cargo could explode at any moment.

The crew of the Río Carcarañá were rescued by another Argentine Merchantman steaming in the same convoy and the ship was left to her fate, her superstructure burning furiously.

The explosion many feared would sink the ship never came and by May 19th the fires onboard had burned themselves out. The Río Carcarañá was towed into Fox Bay where she was boarded and inspected by Argetine Naval Forces. Both the ship and cargo were found to be damaged beyond repair or usefulness, so after all valuable and sensitive material was removed she was left to her fate once again, this time anchored in Fox Bay.

The hulk of the Río Carcarañá was eventually sunk on either May 23rd or May 24th by British aircraft.

Argentina, 1990.
