She was built as a unit of the Kynda class surface cruisers for the Russian Navy.
23 February 1960 keel laid down on the Zhdanov Yard (Northern Yard), Leningrad.
26 March 1961 launched as the GROZNEY.
Displacement 4,400 ton standard, 5,500 ton full load. Dim. 141.9 x 15.8 x 5.3m. (draught)
Powered by two steam turbines 100,000 shp, two shafts, speed 35 knots.
Radius 7,000 mile against 15 knots.
Armament 1 twin SA-N-1 Goa launcher (24 missiles). 8 SS-N-3b Shaddock tubes (8 + 8) reloads). 4 – 76.2mm guns. 4 – 30mm guns. 6 – 21 inch torpedo tubes.
Crew 25 officers and 259 enlisted.
30 December 1962 commissioned.

She was the first of the modern Soviets warships. Initially laid down as destroyers, but on 29 September 1962 reclassed as Rocket Cruiser.
The class was top heavy and only four were built GROZNY, ADMIRAL FOKIN, ADMIRAL GOLOVKO and VARYAG.
The GROZNY was stricken from the navy list on 24 June 1991.
1993 scrapped.
